New Castle, NY – A tragic and deadly car accident claimed the lives of four individuals on Tuesday afternoon when two vehicles collided head-on along a busy highway in Westchester County. The crash, which occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. on the Taconic State Parkway near New Castle, resulted in both vehicles being engulfed in flames within moments of impact.
According to initial reports from the New York State Police, a white passenger van traveling southbound veered across the median into the northbound lanes, striking a black SUV head-on. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud explosion-like noise, followed by thick black smoke rising from the vehicles.
Emergency responders, including fire, EMS, and police units, arrived swiftly at the scene. However, the intensity of the fire made rescue efforts nearly impossible. All four individuals involved—two from each vehicle—were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
State troopers have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash. At this stage, authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure, driver distraction, or a potential medical episode as contributing factors. Investigators are reviewing dashcam footage from nearby vehicles and analyzing skid marks and debris patterns for clues.
Traffic along the Taconic Parkway was shut down in both directions for several hours, causing extensive delays and forcing commuters to seek alternate routes.
Local residents expressed shock and sorrow at the accident. “This road has seen too many tragedies,” said Michelle K., a New Castle resident who lives nearby. “It’s time for state officials to consider installing barriers between lanes to prevent these kinds of crossovers.”
Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement offering condolences to the families of the victims and pledged support for a full investigation.
